HSL paper seed envelopes (I love the wonky type too)

The best email to pop into my inbox all year is the one from the Heritage Seed Library announcing the launch of the members’ catalogue for the coming season. It’s like a little extra Christmas present: my chance to choose six varieties of heritage vegetables you can’t find anywhere else, and for free (well, free as part of a paid-for membership).

The Heritage Seed Library is run by the charity Garden Organic, and it was set up to preserve all the old vegetable varieties that might otherwise be lost in the maelstrom of commercial seed production. It now holds over 800 varieties of seed: none are available on the high street (or even in your local garden centre) and all are contributing to preserving the genetic diversity in our veg varieties which is essential if we’re to fight pests and diseases in the future.
