Tried growing blueberries in pot but did not think they thrived. Labels said they would grow to 6 feet but after tree years in pots they were no more than 18 inches heigh. Acidified a patch of my garden early last year and now they are actually growing. If I can keep the birds off them should have a good crop from my 3 bushes this year.
Hi Terry, you’re quite right – blueberries (like most plants) are always happier in the ground than in pots. But when you’ve no choice – as I haven’t, gardening on soil with a pH of 7.5 – growing in containers is a good alternative.
The main things to get right are to have more than one blueberry, give them the biggest container you can muster and keep them really well watered but with decent drainage so they’re not sitting in soggy mud. It’s a tricky combination to pull off but if you can do it, well worth the effort!
