A new addition to the family

allotment dog, dogs

Regular readers will remember that last year we very sadly lost our beloved Allotment Dog, rather suddenly. Well: we’ve had a dog-shaped hole in our family ever since, so a few weeks ago we decided to put that right. Meet Allotment Dog Junior.

He’s taking his gardening responsibilities very seriously so far: he’s been planting peas (or rather, rearranging their planting after I’d already planted them, but then he is a bit of a perfectionist about these things).

He’s also a whizz at digging planting holes, although he tends to fall into them as his legs are rather short, and has already done some pond gardening, possibly unintentionally as I think he was taking rather too close an interest in the goldfish at the time and suddenly found himself with his head in the waterlily pot. Since I had to fish him out I’m not sure that particular branch of gardening will be a favourite.

I’m afraid I can’t agree with Nigel and sundry anti-dog gardeners (apart from the bit about dog owners not clearing up after themselves): I love having a dog in the garden again. I have a constant companion on my rounds and a faithful shadow to share my triumphs and disasters with (he even looks interested, and what’s more he won’t tell anyone else). And, no matter what I do, he likes me. Now you can’t say that of a cat.

Goodbye to a dear friend

RIP Allotment Dog
2004-2010
Just too sad to do anything just now, so I’m taking some time off. Normal service will be resumed in a week or so when I can be more cheerful again.

allotment dog

I’d just like to interrupt my wanderings around Northumberland to let you know what I was doing at 12:34:56 on the 7th of the 8th month in the 9th year of the century.

I was feeding my poor dog an antibiotic pill wrapped up in mince (he hates pills of all kinds so a little cunning deception is required). This is not entirely a Northumberland-free post as the reason for the antibiotics, and the very silly collar, is that he gave himself a nasty cut in the leg leaping over a barbed wire fence while we were on holiday, so now has chalked up several stitches and a £500 vet’s bill.

In case anyone’s wondering why, it’s because that mischievous but ever-original VP in Chippenham told me to 😀 Thanks for a fun meme, VP!

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow….

allotment dog, snow

It’s no good – I can’t resist. Gotta show you my snow pictures.

Wisley up the road recorded 12″ last night, and I think we’re up to about 16-18″ now. It’s the most snow we’ve had in 18 years (which explains, to you Yanks who regularly hit the two-metre line, why we’re getting so excited about it).

All the cardoon seedheads are wearing white bearskins.

Underneath here somewhere are my patio pots.

And Bob (our resident Roman Emperor) is wearing some very natty headgear.

The pond has stayed clear – just.

And as you can see, it’s still snowing. Hard. Allotment Dog is not impressed, though he does keep trying to eat it (just in case, you understand) and has a good line in snow somersaults.
