Galanthus ‘Diggory’
Spotted these on the Avon Bulbs stand at the RHS Spring Flower show last week, so I thought I’d share.

I’m not much of a galanthophile myself – certainly not enough to pay the four-figure sums currently changing hands for just one bulb of the rarest kinds – but I could see how people get bewitched.

You still wouldn’t find me nose down backside up in some muddy corner of a bleak winter garden just to see them, mind you: and I’m quite happy with my single Galanthus nivalis and the occasional self-seeded double. But these ones were displayed in near-perfect circumstances: under cover (tick!) at eye height (tick!) and each set in beautiful isolation so you could really appreciate every nuance of marking and petal (tick, tick, tick!) Just lovely.
I was there on Wednesday to buy a few spuds and seeds. It all looked so exciting and I can see how easy it would be to slip just one lovely snowdrop into the bag but I stuck to my purpose and came home with lovely spuds instead! (And some chilli plants from Sea Spring …)
Hi Caro! Sorry I missed you – I actually turned up a bit late as I managed to squeeze in a quick visit to the Royal Academy exhibition first (of which more, if I have time, later I hope!)
I admire your restraint: I treated myself to a lovely big streptocarpus from Dibley’s (I got it cheap as they were breaking down their stand) and a lovely new variety of reticulate iris as a thank you present to my in-laws who were yet again providing a hotel service in Ealing.
I’d already bought my spuds from a Seedy Sunday in Frome – also run by Pennards so I recognised a few at the RHS show too 😀 And aren’t Sea Spring chillies lovely… *happy sigh*
Hi Sally! Well done for bagging a bargain – and lucky in-laws, the irises on display were exquisite. I’ve yet to see the RA exhibition; I hear it’s stunning so must make time to go – preferably before my life gets overtaken by seed sowing!
