So here we all are, stuck at home with time on our hands, chaos in the supermarkets, trying not to think about an uncertain future.
What better time to start growing your own food!
This is the first installment of a series taking you setting up your first veg garden week by week – starting with getting your plot ready, plus a few seeds you can be sowing now for ridiculously quick harvests! https://www.learningwithexperts.com/gardening/blog/starting-a-veg-garden-during-quarantine
Because I’m in the shielded group I can’t go to the allotment myself so I’ve got two other people doing things for me. I’ve not been there for a long time. I have had to keep clear of soil and compost because of the bacteria etc..The ground is like fine soot – indeed it is black – and has not had added nutrients for years except for a bit of chicken manure the summer before last. At this stage in things I can’t buy in compost or manure so I’ve provided seaweed feed. Radishes, runner beans and peas have been sown. Radishes are up. Waiting for the others. How soon after they emerge from the soil do you think it would be good to water them with the feed? Can they be overwhelmed if fed too young or would it be getting them off to a good start?
